The Hotel Espana is located at Via Luigi
Luzzatti number 21. The surrounding
area is full of restaurants, pubs, bars, pizzerias, discos
and shops. Via di Porta Maggiore runs parallel to
Via Luzzatti where you can hop on a tram or bus to
Stazione Temini, Rome’s main train
station and the central bus station. Termini
is also the heart of Rome’s efficient underground system
which spreads out under the city on two lines. The closest
underground stop to the hotel is the newly refurbished Manzoni
stop, on line A.
Metro line A connects the hotel with many world famous landmarks.
Five stops from Manzoni is the famous Piazza di Spagna;
three stops from Termini on line B is the Colosseum,
to name but a few.
Rome is famous for its numerous squares where people socialise
and chat in the balmy evenings in the glow of Rome’s
culture and history. One of the most prominent piazzas
is Porta Maggiore, where Rome’s aqueducts
converged supplying the local population by a water channel
– a feat of engineering centuries ahead of its time.
The site is instantly recognisable by the large white arch
similar to the Arch of Constantine. Various
historical monuments have made the area important including
a temple, underground Basilica and the unusual Tomb
of the Baker.
Another piazza well worth visiting is Piazza San
Giovanni which is a 10 minute walk from the hotel.
This piazza is home to the Basilica di San Giovanni
in Laterano and was the first Christian Basilica
constructed in Rome. It is Rome’s principle cathedral
and merits the short stroll from the Hotel Espana.
There is also a fabulous market on Via Sannio close
to Porta San Giovanni where you can buy new
and second-hand clothes. It is opened until about 1pm Monday
to Saturday.
